Application of Mathematical Phantom to Precise Calibration for Whole-body Counting

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The calibration of whole-body counter (WBC), that means the determination of the body burden of radionuclides, is generally carried out by comparing the measurements between the human body and the standard calibration phantom. The measured counting efficiency is affected by the deference of size, shape and distribution of radioactivity between them. Therefore, if the standard phantom does not represent the human body adequately, it is necessary to correct by those factors. In accordance with various human subjects, it is impossible practically to prepare various sizes of physical phantoms beforehand. The application of mathematical phantom by Monte Carlo simulation is considered as one of the useful method to solve this problem. In the present study, the applicability of Monte Carlo simulation to the calibration of whole-body counting was investigated.

The calibration of a LE Ge detector system has been performed at CIEMAT Whole Body Counter for the assessment of Am in skull and knee. The facility counts with a Cohen phantom simulating a human head with 1000 Bq of Americium homogeneously distributed in the bone equivalent material. Measurements of the LE Ge system with the skull phantom were carried out in an optimisation study of counting ef...

INTRODUCTION: In Vivo measurements use radiation detectors, such as NaI, that require calibration using a source that is both geometrically and materially similar to the actual sample to be measured. In the case of whole body counting, the sample being measured is a person. Traditionally, BOttle Mannikin ABsorber (BOMAB) phantoms have been used for this purpose. A BOMAB phantom usually consists...
متن کاملAn Intercomparison of Counting Efficiency and the Performance of Two Whole-Body Counters According to the Type of Phantom
Background: Whole-body counters are widely used to evaluate internal contamination of the internal presence of gamma-emitting radionuclides. In internal dosimetry, it is a basic requirement that quality control procedures be applied to verify the reliability of the measured results. The implementation of intercomparison programs plays an important role in quality control, and the accuracy of th...
متن کاملEvaluation on the Counting Efficiency of a Chair-type Whole Body Counter for Accident Monitoring of Internal Contamination
Major accidental release of radionuclides has the potential for significant radiation exposure in large populations.[1] Rapid monitoring for internally contaminated people is required in radiation accident. If the release contains radionuclides which emit high energy gamma ray, the most suitable mean of providing this monitoring is Whole Body Counter(WBC).[2] Chair-type WBC is more suitable tha...
متن کاملMathematical Calibration of a Whole-Body Counter
This paper describes the mathematical efficiency calibration of the whole-body counter at Forschungszentrum Jülich using Monte Carlo codes and mathematical anthropomorphic phantoms. As a prerequisite for the Monte Carlo simulations a precise model of the 4 high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors had to be developed. Because the technical data provided by the manufacturer were not sufficient for ...
